Surfing South Australia is exploring a recreational initiative with the aim of attracting new talent to the surf community.
Surf coach, Amanda Couzner has organised The McCracken Country Club Ladies Surf Retreat this Wednesday 25 August 2010 at Surfing SA HQ at Port Noarlunga.
"The McCracken Country Club Ladies surf retreat entails all the elements that can be found in a surf retreat in South America, Europe and East Coast, but this is happening in our South Australian backyard," Amanda says.
"There is nothing else like it in SA and for all those women who have always wanted to learn to surf, but for a million reasons never have, this retreat is the perfect opportunity.
"Women’s surfing is now recognised as force to be reckoned with, as seen at the recent Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior that saw young women charging six-foot waves at Waitpinga Beach, hoping to take home a piece of the $36,000 prize pool.
"Australian women are leading the charge in the ASP Women’s world tour, with Australian Stephanie Gilmore holding the past three world titles and is in the lead for the 2010 crown.
"The struggle that SA faces is that our surf beaches are not in the metropolitan area and the distance is a barrier for surfing participation."
Surfing South Australia are tackling women’s surfing from a different angle in order to encourage South Aussie girls out of the city and into the waves.
"Without the allure of the warm, sunny east coast weather, we have to offer SA ladies a few extra incentives to get them into the waves," Amanda says.
"Our retreat is going to offer that perfect mix of luxury and adventure. We will take the ladies out of their comfort zones and show them the exhilaration that is experienced when learning to surf. However we wont deny them the luxury of a warm shower, fantastic food and great accommodation.
"By exposing surfing to women who wouldn’t normally go surfing alone will help develop women’s surfing in the State. But more importantly it will expose the fantastic lifestyle that is surfing."
Amanda extends 'a big thank you' to sponsors for getting behind the initiative and womens surfing: The McCracken Country club, Coopers, Blue Glue Bikinis and Joyful Buddhas.
